Thanks to Jules for posting a comment that drew my attention to a piece in the New York Times Science section on Rob Holman, a coastal geologist at Oregon State. Not only does he run the unique Argus program which allows imaging of sand movement in nearshore environments (demonstrating how little we really understand about these complex systems), but he's also an arenophile. The article, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/06/science/06prof.html?_r=1, contains a link to an audio slide show with some examples of Argus imaging. See also the Coastal Imaging Lab website at the University, http://cil-www.coas.oregonstate.edu/.
Another link from the NYTimes about Rob Holman's sand specimen collection from sites marked on a world map with clickable pics.
