Biochips are indeed impressive. Paradoxically, they use cutting-edge digital electronic technology to produce analog signals, luminous intensities that are then digitally measured and quantified, as described here:

It's also entertaining to see mention of bonding of samples to "fluorophore-, silver-, or chemiluminescence-labeled targets"--not so far from Fox Talbot and Daguerre. Molecular mugshots, in effect.
